BUITEMS Students Explore Smart City Technologies During Industrial Visit to Quetta's Intelligent Traffic Management System

Quetta: Reinforcing its commitment to experiential learning and industry engagement, the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) at the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) organized an industrial visit to the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) under the Chief Minister's Package for Quetta Development (CMPQD). The visit was arranged by the IEEE Quetta Subsection in collaboration with the IEEE BUITEMS Student Branch for students of Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Software Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Computer Engineering.
The visit was led by Dr. Raza Ali, Assistant Professor, Chair of the IEEE Quetta Subsection, and Counselor of the IEEE BUITEMS Student Branch. The initiative aimed to provide students with practical exposure to intelligent transportation systems and the latest technologies driving smart city infrastructure and traffic management.
Upon arrival, the BUITEMS delegation was warmly welcomed by the CMPQD technical team, who introduced students to the design, operation, and objectives of Quetta's Intelligent Traffic Management System. The students toured the centralized control room, where they observed real-time surveillance feeds from strategically installed traffic monitoring cameras across the city and gained first-hand insight into the management of urban traffic operations.
The technical sessions were conducted by Engr. Aryan Khan, Traffic Engineer, and Engr. Bilal, who explained the architecture and operational framework of the Intelligent Traffic Management System. Students learned about the deployment of surveillance cameras, field equipment, power management systems, communication networks, live video transmission, centralized monitoring, and data storage technologies used to ensure efficient traffic management.
A major highlight of the visit was the demonstration of advanced intelligent video analytics powered by artificial intelligence. Students observed technologies such as Vehicle Detection, Vehicle Make and Model Recognition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), and Vehicle Counting, while also learning how centrally managed intelligent traffic signals help monitor traffic conditions, reduce congestion, and improve road safety throughout Quetta.
The industrial visit provided students with valuable practical insights into the integration of electrical engineering, communication systems, artificial intelligence, computer vision, data analytics, and smart infrastructure technologies. The interactive discussions enabled participants to connect classroom knowledge with real-world engineering applications, further strengthening their technical understanding and professional competencies.
