Undergraduate Research Colloquium (URC) 2025

The Undergraduate Research Colloquium (URC) 2025 was successfully held on Wednesday, 9th July 2025, at BUITEMS. The event was organized by the Faculty of Information & Communication Technology (FICT) in collaboration with the IEEE BUITEMS Student Branch and IEEE Quetta Subsection. The prize money for the winners of URC 2025 was sponsored by Safa Quetta, Taleem Foundation, and Mountain View Technology Park. As a flagship academic activity of FICT, URC aims to provide a platform for final-year students to present their Final Year Projects (FYPs), encouraging innovation, research culture, and exposure to academic and industry professionals. The URC 2025 brought together undergraduate students from diverse disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Telecom, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Computer Engineering. The projects were evaluated in two main academic categories and four special award categories: Humanitarian Technology, Climate and Environment, Sustainable Cities, and Commercial Viability & Startup Potential. The evaluation process began at 11:00 AM on the Green Carpet of Sir Syed Block. More than 15 judges from academia and industry evaluated the projects based on creativity, problem-solving, technical depth, and real-world impact.

The closing ceremony, held at Pink Hall, began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by remarks from Chief Guest, Dr. Khalid Hafeez, Vice Chancellor of BUITEMS. The Guest of Honor, Dr. Faisal Ahmad Khan, CEO of the Balochistan Public Private Partnership Authority, shared valuable insights on how student research can contribute to public development. Awards were distributed to the top projects in both categories.

In the Electrical, Electronics & Telecom Engineering category:
• The first prize was awarded to Electrical Engineering students Muhammad Junaid, Muhammad Farooq, and Muhammad Younas for their project titled “Raspberry Pi-Based Smart Parking System with App Integration and Vertical Lift Mechanism.” Supervisor: Engr. Kalsoom Baloch.
• The second prize went to Electrical Engineering students Mir Muhammad, Maqbool Ahmed, and Munawar Hussain for their project “Design and Development of Tri-Mode Electric Bicycle.” Supervisor: Engr. Kalsoom Baloch.
• The third prize was won by Electronics Engineering students Kanz Ul Eman and Ayesha Shahzad for their project “Smart Gesture-Controlled Glove Using Conductive Yarn.” Supervisor: Dr. Junaid, Co-Supervisor: Dr. Zameer Shah.

In the Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT & Computer Engineering category:
• The first prize was awarded to Computer Engineering students Muhammad Ayaz Khan, Rafeh Jamil, and M. Saad Ismail for their project “Suspicious Human Activity Detection Real-Time Using Machine Learning Web App.” Supervisor: Mr. Arsalan-ul-Haq.
• The second prize was secured by Computer Science students Jawad Khan, Muhammad Irfan Ullah, and Furqan Ahmed for their project “Automated Retinopathy Diagnosis System with Real-Time Image Processing.” Supervisor: Dr. Akbar Khan Nasar.
• The third prize was awarded to the group of Computer Engineering students, Jawad Khan, Muhammad Irfan Ullah, and Furqan Ahmed, for another project titled “Vehicle Barrier Access Control System Using Machine Learning.” Supervisor: Dr. Akbar Khan Nasar.

In the special award categories:
• For Climate and Environment: Computer Engineering students Abdul Qudoos, Mohsin Ali, and Muhammad Awais won the award for their project “Real-Time IoT-Based Water Quality Assessment Module.” Supervisor: Dr. Shafi Ullah.
• For Sustainable Cities: Electronics Engineering students Umair Iqbal, Muhammad Mudasir, and Aaqil Masih received the award for their project “Machine Learning-Based Fare Collection System Using Facial Recognition.” Supervisor: Dr. Raza Ali.
• For Humanitarian Technology: Information Technology students Ansa Ayub, Syed Akmal Shah, and Muhammad Ibad won the award for their project “Asaan Ilaaj: AI-Powered Symptom and Drug Interaction Checker.” Supervisor: Dr. Raja Asif, Co-Supervisor: Mr. Irfan Magsi.
• For Commercial Viability & Startup Potential: Software Engineering students Shahid Khan and Ahmed Ilyas were awarded for their promising project “Ideaignite – An AI-Powered FYP Recommendation System”. Supervisor: Dr. Muhammad Aadil Siddiqui.

The event concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Surat Khan, Dean FICT. He also appreciated the faculty and student volunteers of IEEE BUITEMS Student Branch and IEEE Quetta subsection for their efforts in organizing such a meaningful academic platform. Shields were presented to all judges and prize money to the winners. Dean FICT also thanks the sponsors Safa Quetta, Taleem Foundation, and Mountain View Technology Park for their generous support in terms of prize money. The success of URC 2025 reflects the commitment of BUITEMS to empowering students through research, innovation, and collaboration with industry.
